Education and Collaboration

At the intersection of higher education and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) lies ABET’s mission to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education while promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, aligning with SDG 4. Through our accreditation process for higher education programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology, ABET plays a crucial role in strengthening the means of implementation outlined in SDG 17.

Our Strategy

In order to advance our purpose, we’ve established three strategic goals with specific targets and objectives set through 2026. These were adopted by the ABET Board of Directors in March 2023 and provide the basis for a common set of long-term goals for ABET as we continue to progress and build an organization fit to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

25line-2b

goal 1

Broaden Our Engagement Globally

ABET will identify and implement activities that foster alignment and partnerships with organizations sharing similar goals and values, thereby increasing awareness of ABET’s purpose-driven service to society. Additionally, we aim to collaborate within the frameworks of the United Nations and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to cultivate leadership opportunities for ABET. We will continue to support our international partners, including other accreditors and member organizations such as International Engineering Alliance (IEA), Seoul Accord, The International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES), Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC), The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and The International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE).

25line-4b

goal 2

Grow and Enhance Membership to Support ABET Activities

ABET is committed to enhancing membership to strengthen support for our initiatives. To achieve this, we will evaluate and analyze our membership model and volunteer structure. By fostering closer collaboration with our members, we aim to create a stronger network capable of driving impactful change within our organization and beyond.

25line-1b

goal 3

Continue Expansion of Our Professional Programs

ABET will continue expanding its professional programs to meet the evolving needs of our constituents. This includes further developing education programs in the assessment of adult learning to better serve ABET program participants. Additionally, we will introduce tailored course offerings for non-traditional ABET constituents and implement a “stackable” credential system for assessment professionals. To ensure the quality of our offerings, we will advance microcredential quality assurance, including piloting certification programs. Furthermore, we will explore opportunities to develop offerings in emerging areas such as sustainability principles, thereby remaining responsive to the changing landscape of professional education.

PResident’s Letter

This past year has been one of reflection, growth and renewed commitment, made possible by the collective efforts of ABET’s member societies, board members, commissioners, program evaluators, team chairs and staff. Together, we continue to demonstrate the strength of our community.

Guided by our strategic priorities, ABET has advanced its mission to support quality assurance across the full continuum of education and professional practice. As global workforce demands evolve and technologies accelerate change, the need for lifelong learning has never been more critical. ABET remains committed to ensuring that learners—at every stage of their careers—have access to high-quality, relevant and ethical educational opportunities.

Our annual symposium highlighted this commitment, bringing together global educators, practitioners and leaders around the theme of Lifelong Learning. The conversations and collaborations underscored an important truth: education does not end with a degree. In response, ABET continues to expand its quality assurance offerings beyond traditional accreditation, including the Recognition of Credentials, which supports alternative learning pathways by providing rigor and confidence in microcredentials and other non-degree, skills-based credentials.

This year also marked continued progress in ABET’s global engagement and sustainability efforts. Our work with partners such as the United Nations Global Compact and the Lemelson Foundation’s Engineering for One Planet initiative reflects our shared responsibility to prepare learners not only with technical competence, but with the perspective needed to address societal and environmental challenges. The individuals and programs recognized through the 2025 ABET Awards exemplify this impact. We are glad to continue to support the nearly 200,000 graduates each year from ABET-accredited programs worldwide.

As we look ahead, ABET’s role in fostering lifelong learning—and assuring quality across diverse educational pathways—will remain central to our purpose. I invite you to explore this report to learn more about the meaningful progress we have made together and the opportunities that lie ahead as we continue to support learners, educators and institutions in building a better future. Thank you for the honor of serving as your president.

“Together, let’s embrace lifelong learning as a pathway to inspire confidence and build a better world.”

Lifelong learning has always been essential to progress, but today it is more critical than ever. As education, technology and workforce needs continue to evolve, the ability to continuously learn, adapt and apply knowledge shapes both individual success and societal impact.

At ABET, lifelong learning is central to our mission. Through accreditation and expanded quality assurance initiatives, we work to ensure education is preparing students to enter the workforce or professionals up-skill to meet the demands of a dynamic work environment. As pathways diversify beyond traditional degrees, we support confidence and trust in education by assuring quality in programs, professional development and professional credentials.

Preparing learners for the future requires more than keeping pace with change—it requires a commitment to adaptability, integrity and continuous improvement. Educators, institutions and partners play a vital role in fostering this mindset, ensuring learning extends beyond graduation and throughout a lifetime of professional practice.

I invite you to explore this report to learn more about how ABET is advancing lifelong learning through quality assurance and collaboration, and how together we are helping to inspire confidence and build a better world.

CAO’s Letter

At ABET, quality assurance is about more than standards or criteria — it is about ensuring learners are prepared to succeed in a changing world.

Through accreditation and program assessment education, we work with higher education administrators, faculty, staff and industry professionals to strengthen programs, improve outcomes and build confidence in educational quality worldwide.

In 2025, ABET continued to grow its global impact through our voluntary peer-review accreditation process and assessment of student learning. Grounded in continuous improvement, our criteria focus on what students learn and achieve while helping programs adapt to evolving workforce and societal needs.

Programmatic assessment education is equally essential to this mission. Over the past year, ABET expanded workshops, self-paced credentialing courses and learning opportunities that equip educators with practical tools to measure student learning, guide improvement and advance quality assurance.

This progress is made possible through the dedication of our expert volunteers and partners around the world. As we reflect on 2025, ABET remains committed to broadening access, supporting innovation and helping institutions navigate the future of education with confidence.

(CBM), we are proud to report continued financial stability, with net assets increasing by $404k from operations alone (not including unrealized gains from investments). This strong financial position enables us to expand our global quality assurance services while continuing to invest in innovation. Our financial strategy remains disciplined and forward-looking—focused on sustainable asset growth, strategic investment in emerging opportunities, and maintaining a prudent cash position to support long-term impact.

This year marked meaningful progress in expanding our Professional Programs and deepening partnerships with industry to advance a robust quality assurance framework for credentials. This significantly broadens our ability to reach more learners globally.

We also introduced our assessment of student learning credentialing courses—such as Program Assessment Design and Development and Program Assessment Data and Decision Making—building a more cohesive, stackable learning ecosystem. This approach not only strengthens institutional capacity for outcomes-based education and continuous improvement, but also through flexible, high-quality credential pathways, we are extending access to professional development for educators around the globe.

As we look ahead, ABET remains committed to advancing its purpose. We remain committed to expanding access to high-quality education and supporting lifelong learning pathways, all of which are central to our strategy. Through continued innovation, global engagement and disciplined financial stewardship, we will ensure ABET continues to set the standard for quality, relevance and impact in STEM education worldwide.

Board of Delegates

The ABET Board of Delegates is responsible for approving accreditation policies and procedures, general criteria and the organization of our accreditation commissions. Our Board of Delegates is comprised of 1-3 representatives from each of ABET’s 35 member societies. The number of seats on the Board of Delegates is determined by the number of accredited programs for which the society is responsible. The President-Elect serves as a non-voting Chair of the Board of Delegates. The Board of Delegates is advised by one board-level council: Accreditation.

Area Delegations

The four Area Delegations, which are aligned with the curricular areas of our commissions, are responsible for approving program-specific accreditation criteria and selecting members of the accreditation commissions, as well as assigning programs to member societies within their areas. Seats on each Area Delegation are apportioned based on the number of accredited programs for which a society serves as “lead” within the relevant accreditation commission. Each Area Delegation is responsible for selecting an Area Director to serve on the ABET Board of Directors. The individuals selected also serve as non-voting chairs of their respective Delegations.
