Our Purpose

Our approach, the standards we set and the quality we guarantee, inspires confidence in those who aim to build a better world — one that is safer, more efficient, more inclusive and more sustainable.

Assuring confidence is not only our core purpose but also the commitment we uphold with our stakeholders on a daily basis.

It serves as the single organizing idea that governs all our decisions and drives our actions. Effectively, it acts as our guiding star, steering us toward the successful achievement of our objectives.

What We Do

ABET is a nonprofit, ISO 9001 certified organization focused on quality assurance of STEM academic programs. We also provide continuing education services for professionals.

Why We Do It

We aim to make a positive difference in the world: Our approach, the standards we set and the quality we guarantee, inspires confidence in those that aim to build a better world — one that is safer, more efficient, more inclusive and more sustainable.

Education And Collaboration

At the intersection of higher education and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) lies ABET’s mission to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education while promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, aligning with SDG 4. Through our accreditation process for higher education programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology, ABET plays a crucial role in strengthening the means of implementation outlined in SDG 17.

Our Strategy

In order to advance our purpose, we’ve established three strategic goals with specific targets and objectives set through 2026. These were adopted by the ABET Board of Directors in March 2023 and provide the basis for a common set of long-term goals for ABET as we continue to progress and build an organization fit to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

GOAL 1

Broaden Our Engagement Globally

ABET will identify and implement activities that foster alignment and partnerships with organizations sharing similar goals and values, thereby increasing awareness of ABET’s purpose-driven service to society. Additionally, we aim to collaborate within the frameworks of the United Nations and UNESCO to cultivate leadership opportunities for ABET. We will continue to support our international partners, including other accreditors and member organizations such as IEA, Seoul Accord, IFEES, GEDC, WFEO and INQAAHE.

GOAL 2

Grow And Enhance Membership To Support ABET Activities

ABET is committed to enhancing membership to strengthen support for our initiatives. To achieve this, we will evaluate and analyze our membership model and volunteer structure. By fostering closer collaboration with our members, we aim to create a stronger network capable of driving impactful change within our organization and beyond.

GOAL 3

Continue Expansion Of Our Professional Programs

ABET will continue expanding its professional programs to meet the evolving needs of our constituents. This includes further developing education programs in the assessment of adult learning to better serve ABET program participants. Additionally, we will introduce tailored course offerings for non-traditional ABET constituents and implement a “stackable” credential system for assessment professionals. To ensure the quality of our offerings, we will advance micro-credential quality assurance, including piloting certification programs. Furthermore, we will explore opportunities to develop offerings in emerging areas such as sustainability principles, thereby remaining responsive to the changing landscape of professional education.

President’s Letter

It has been a remarkable year thanks to all of you on the ‘one ABET’ team – ABET’s member societies, board members, program evaluators, team chairs, commissioners and staff.

We successfully conducted 940 accreditation reviews in the 2022-23 cycle. We are moving forward with intent on our newly refreshed strategic goals: Broadening engagement globally, growing and enhancing membership to support ABET activities, and continuing expansion of our professional programs.

Our annual in-person symposium highlighted ABET’s leadership as a global organization to “Build a More Resilient World” while shining a bright spotlight on our ongoing efforts to strengthen and promote principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. ABET is now a member of the United Nations Global Compact and we have launched a new award to recognize innovation in sustainability in collaboration with the Lemelson Foundation Engineering for One Planet (EOP) Initiative. The distinguished award recipients whom we honored at our 2023 ABET Awards ceremony exemplify ABET’s commitment to make a difference and make the world a better place. Just imagine the 200,00 students who graduate annually from ABET accredited programs and the impact they will have on our collective futures! I invite you to read more about our exceptional work during the past year in this report.

In closing, I am deeply humbled for the opportunity to serve you and ABET as your 2023 President and know that you will scale greater heights under the leadership of President Hamid Fonooni and the ‘one ABET’ team.

CEO’s Letter

As we reflect on the past year and look ahead to the future, I am reminded of the African proverb, “If you want to go far, go together.”

This sentiment encapsulates the collaborative spirit that drives the work of ABET and inspires me each day. Together, with the dedicated efforts of our staff and volunteers, ABET is committed to building a more sustainable world, both today and tomorrow.

In a world faced with myriad challenges, including the devastating impacts of climate change and the ongoing repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of sustainability has never been more apparent. At ABET, we recognize the significance of our role in contributing to a more sustainable future. Through our accreditation processes and educational initiatives, we strive to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – 17 goals with 169 targets aimed at addressing global issues by 2030.

As we navigate through uncertain times and work towards a better tomorrow, one thing remains certain: ABET will continue to champion sustainability and make a positive impact on the world. We are committed to our mission, and together, we will never stop striving to make the world a better place for generations to come.

The mission to enhance technical education globally and facilitate student and graduate mobility is supported by mutual recognition agreements (MRAs).

These agreements, established among organizations accrediting academic degree programs, affirm the substantial equivalency of accreditation processes and graduates’ preparedness for professional practice at entry level. Key points regarding MRAs include:

• Objective: MRAs aim to improve technical education worldwide and enable graduates to seamlessly transition into professional practice or further studies.

• Characteristics: Substantial equivalency among accreditation systems denotes comparable standards, outcomes and processes, though not necessarily identical ones.

• Signatory MRAs: Notable MRAs include the Seoul Accord for computing programs, bilateral agreements between Engineers Canada and ABET for engineering programs and multilateral accords such as the Washington, Sydney, and Dublin Accords for various engineering and technology programs.

Each MRA entails specific guidelines and recognition criteria, as exemplified by the Seoul Accord for computing programs, Engineers Canada Bilateral MRA for engineering, and the Sydney and Dublin Accords for engineering technology at bachelor's and associate levels, respectively. These agreements aid in determining cross-jurisdictional recognition for licensure, employment or further academic pursuits. Additionally, the procedures for engaging in MRAs emphasize rigorous evaluation, peer review and adherence to established quality assurance standards to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of mutual recognition efforts.

CFO/COO Statement

I am pleased to present ABET, Inc.’s financial results for the fiscal year 2023 (October 2022-September 2023). These financial results have been audited by Councilor, Buchanan and Mitchell, P.C., CBM. As a result of the audit, CBM was able to provide an opinion that ABET’s consolidated financial statements are presented fairly, in all material aspects, and illustrate the true financial position of our organization as of September 30, 2023, in accordance with the accounting principles generally accepted by the United States of America.

During 2023, ABET maintained a healthy, balanced financial position. Our net assets grew by $1.3 million.

We were extremely pleased to be able to offer our flagship event, the ABET Symposium, in person for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. It was very well attended in Nashville, TN and appreciated by all who attended with a focused topic on resiliency. That said, our continued resiliency enabled us to ensure quality and confidence through our program services of accreditation and assessment of adult learning. We were able to accredit new programs globally, increase our professional offerings, reduce member fees and continue to research and develop new services to answer society’s  need of assuring quality educational.

ABET’s financial position continues to be secure. We have a financial strategy to steadily grow assets, research new opportunities, develop balanced operating budgets and maintain a prudent cash position. ABET remains in a strong financial position to continue to serve society in ensuring quality STEM education.

Area Delegations

The four Area Delegations, which are aligned with the curricular areas of our commissions, are responsible for approving program-specific accreditation criteria and selecting members of the accreditation commissions, as well as assigning programs to member societies within their areas. Seats on each Area Delegation are apportioned based on the number of accredited programs for which a society serves as “lead” within the relevant accreditation commission. Each Area Delegation is responsible for selecting an Area Director to serve on the ABET Board of Directors. The individuals selected also serve as non-voting chairs of their respective Delegations.

Academic Advisory Council

The Academic Advisory Council (AAC) provides our leadership with access to academic viewpoints on issues of accreditation involving applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology education.

It also guides our organization in matters affecting the relevant professions, reactions to proposed programs, procedures and policies as they relate to the education sector of our constituencies. The AAC also works as a communication channel between us and the academic community.

Through increased participation at all levels of our organization, AAC members develop and implement mechanisms to engage diverse audiences of the academic community in our accreditation activities.
